Lessons from 10 Years in Business That Changed Everything

Business lessons don’t always come wrapped in a neat checklist. They’re earned through late nights, wrong turns, deep breaths—and a lot of coffee.

When I started out, I was a one-woman show juggling All. The. Things. Fast forward 10 years, and I now run four businesses (yep, four!) and still find time for joy, holidays, and the occasional meme in the team WhatsApp.

Here are five big lessons I’ve learned that helped me move from constant overwhelm to calm, confident CEO.

Boundaries Are Everything

I learnt this one the hard way.

I used to reply to emails at all hours, work weekends without a second thought, and say “yes” to everything—even if it meant logging on at 6am or 10pm.

I thought that made me reliable. Valuable.

Turns out? It just made me resentful.

These days, my boundaries look like this:

  • No replying to emails outside of working hours
  • If I choose to work weekends, I schedule emails to send Monday
  • Work comes through via email or project tools (not WhatsApp or Instagram DMs!)

Boundaries protect your energy and your business. Your work should support your life, not consume it.

Find Your Zone of Genius (and Delegate the Rest)

When I launched, I said yes to everything:
Admin? Sure.
Website updates? Why not.
“If I can Google it, I can probably do it,” I told myself.

Spoiler: that’s not sustainable.

Eventually, I realised which tasks gave me energy—and which made me want to fake a power cut.

My zone of genius? Client relationships, operations, and getting sh*t done.

So, I built a team:

  • A bookkeeper (because spreadsheets stress me out)
  • A social media manager (because batching Reels is not my vibe)
  • A website guru (because I once broke a page just trying to change an image…)

Delegating gave me the freedom to focus on what I love. And that’s where the magic happens

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

In the early days, I undercharged. I offered discounts. I thought staying affordable meant being approachable.

But I was undervaluing myself—and teaching others to do the same.

When I finally raised my rates to reflect the transformation I deliver? The right clients didn’t flinch. They trusted me more.

And it wasn’t just pricing that felt uncomfortable.

I still remember my first networking event: 7:30am, heart racing, wondering who to sit with like it was the school cafeteria.

But I did it. I smiled. I said hello. And some of those strangers became clients, collaborators—even friends.

Growth doesn’t come from hiding behind your inbox. Confidence comes from action.

It’s How You Make People Feel

I’ve received amazing testimonials over the years. But the ones I love most?

“You’ve changed how I feel about my business.”
“I finally feel supported.”
“I don’t feel alone anymore.”

That’s what I’m here for. Yes, we handle the admin and ops. But we also bring peace of mind, partnership, and space to breathe.

That’s the real transformation.

Fun is Fuel (Not Fluff)

Let’s be honest—no one starts a business to feel more stressed than they did in their corporate job. But it happens.

And I didn’t want to build a business that felt like a chore. I wanted it to feel fun, joyful, and human.

So, we started weaving in more fun:

  • Memes in the team WhatsApp (yes, even the cheeky ones)
  • Asking new enquiries about their favourite biscuit
  • Celebrating the little wins: Trello boards ticked off, newsletters sent, social posts scheduled

Because fun isn’t just a bonus—it’s what keeps us resilient and connected. It’s what keeps us going.

Ten Years On…

Ten years ago, I didn’t even know what a VA was.

Now? I run multiple businesses, support brilliant business owners, and have the flexibility to spend a random Tuesday in Wales if I want to.

It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m beyond grateful.

Thank you to every client, every associate—past and present—who’s been part of this journey. I truly couldn’t do it without you.

Here’s to the next ten!
