Is it important to have a niche as a virtual assistant?

This is a big buzzword that lots of people talk about in business.  There are lots of pros and cons in having a niche and you can get lost in the conundrum of whether you need to ‘have one’.

I truly believe that to begin, you just need to get started in your journey as a Virtual Assistant. Of course, you need to know your strengths and weaknesses – if spreadsheets make you shudder or creating Canva images gives you the creeps then don’t have these as services you offer.

Any kind of accounts or bookkeeping work freaks me out so we have an associate bookkeeper who looks after this for our clients.  We have an accountant who keeps on top of all things accounts and tax returns so that we don’t have to worry.

What is a niche?

A niche is something you offer specifically – it might be graphic design, working with photographers or coaches or having a niche into a specific platform such as becoming a Canva Pro or Dubsado Genius so that know you are the ‘go-to’ person in that area although this does tend to come with experience

Narrowing down your niche can be fairly simple and not over-complex.

It might be something super simple like the type of person you’d like to talk to.  If you focus on working with creatives only for example you’ll be able to target people more easily, being able to understand their challenges more easily, creating packages and services that will be attractive to those people, easier to create content, more specific work with – this list is endless.

The possibilities are endless once you start to brainstorm!

A niche can be a good idea if you want to really focus on a core area and become the go-to person for a particular subject.  If you’re consistently learning to improve your skills and knowledge you’ll become super qualified and therefore be able to increase your rates or packages.

Some people may think that you can only be successful if you have a niche however, at the end of the day, it’s your business, your rules and you decide what you want to do!

Boatman Admin Services doesn’t have a niche but we have been told that we’re the go-to VA for getting ‘stuff’ done in a super quick time period…so we’ll take that!  We’re a great example that you don’t ‘need’ to niche to have a great client base or have clients that use your services for many years.  Our clients seem to stay with us for many years as we grow with them.
