Why you should be tracking data in your business

When you are running a business it can be a nightmare trying to keep track of absolutely EVERYTHING from your social media followers, your leads, to how many cups of tea you’ve had in a day (did that really push your business forward when you reviewed the tea chart?!)

How do you know what you really need to keep track of??  When I started my business I made the mistake of tracking LOTS of different things that really bought zero value and I would spend a day a month filing it in but getting no insight.  I’ve now nailed my tracker so that it really brings benefit to me as a business owner.

A Lead to Customer Tracker will allow you to monitor and identify all the leads that are coming into your business. You can then gain insight and learn from the date and the tracker even gives you space to add notes as to why they didn’t become a customer or when you should follow them up again.

Social Media Growth is another important area to monitor.  You’ll gain insight into what platforms are really working for you and highlight those platforms that you could perhaps say goodbye to.  Once upon a time, I created content for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.  By tracking the  growth and interaction, I could see where I was gaining followers and interactions.  I was then adding any new leads onto the lead tracker.  This meant eventually, I stopped using Facebook and Twitter as my ideal clients weren’t on these platforms.

Initially, I didn’t have an accounts package set up so set up an Income Tracker.  This allowed me to see where my money was coming from every month.   I was then able to use this information to see trends, plan financial goals and see how the business was growing month on month.

Finally, I created a Celebration Tracker.  This allowed me to track all of my wins, no matter how big or small.  When you’re self employed it’s far too easy to let the good times pass by!

I really feel that these are the only things I need to track to keep on top of things – anything else is just a bit of a waste of time and energy.
