Back in 2018, I joined a local networking group. At that point, I had been in business for two years and was just starting to scratch the surface of ‘getting out there’ and promoting Boatman Admin Services.
As an introvert, stepping into that room at 7:30 a.m. on a chilly morning was daunting. Thankfully, I had met the host the week before, so I made a beeline for him. He knew I was nervous and immediately introduced me to another business owner he thought I’d get along with.
That person was Kate—owner of Copper & Blossom. Since then, she has done all of my professional photoshoots, and we’ve become each other’s accountability buddies… as well as very good friends and travel buddies!
What Is an Accountability Buddy?
Running a business can feel lonely. Unlike in a traditional job, where you can ask colleagues for advice or have a quick chat, being self-employed often means figuring things out alone.
An accountability buddy is someone you regularly meet with (for Kate and me, it’s once a month) to discuss progress, set achievable goals, and hold each other accountable. These goals can be simple, like updating a social media profile picture, signing a new client, trying a new networking group, or dedicating 15 minutes a day to a specific task.
The key is that our sessions are friendly and informal—often over tea and cake! If we don’t meet a goal, there’s no criticism. Instead, we discuss what happened, whether it’s worth rolling forward, or if it’s something to let go of altogether.
What Have I Gained from Having Kate as My Accountability Buddy?
- A Fresh Perspective
Having someone outside your industry to bounce ideas off is invaluable. Whether it’s a new service or a business strategy, discussing it with Kate helps me gauge whether it’s worth pursuing and if it’ll stand out.
- Unwavering Support
Running a business has its highs and lows. An accountability buddy reminds you why you started and cheers you on during tough times. Let’s be honest—2024 was challenging for many small businesses. That’s why we make a point of celebrating each other’s wins… sometimes even with a glass of wine!
- Staying Accountable
I’m great at meeting deadlines for clients but often let my own business tasks slide. Knowing I have to report back to Kate gives me the push I need to follow through on my commitments.
- Increased Motivation
Discussing goals and achievements each month keeps me motivated. It’s easier to stay focused when someone else is rooting for your success.
- A Trusted Confidante
Beyond business, having someone who understands the challenges of self-employment is priceless. Kate has become a trusted friend, not just a business ally.
Do You Have an Accountability Buddy?
